We thank Audrey Molloy for a most stimulating evening last week, hearing about contemporary trends in photography. Detailed notes are below and attached. Please mark your calendars for all the events in the calendar, but especially:
Tuesday, March 26, 6:30 – Beth Gorham, curator for NSCC current show
THURSDAY, April 25, 6:00 – Frist guided tour on Dorothea Lange’s work (different date! different time!!). We’ll do a sign up sheet in March.
- Thanks to Audrey Molloy, arts critic, photographer and writer currently based in Nashville, for a rich presentation, “Contemporary Trends in Photography/Visual Storytelling.” We will be posting more from Audrey when it’s available, but for a glimpse of the fine photos she presented, see at least the cover and a few representative photos in Aperture’s “Photography is Magic” by Charlotte Cotton: https://aperture.org/shop/photography-is-magic-3681/..
- To say that contemporary photography is breaking the boundaries of how people think of photography is an understatement. For example “still life” is a trend, but with constructed and conceptual items in the studio. “Photography about photography” is also a trend.
- The photos Audrey presented were experimental, framed by “Web 2.0,” and raise fascinating questions about the definition of photography. I managed to catch a few names of some of these phtographers – To whet your appetite, see:

Summer Reading: Send book suggestions to Emily.email@example.com. Some great titles already proposed -we’ll have a survey later this spring and settle upon our group read. Current projects: thanks to the half dozen members who brought in examples of their current work – intriguing new approaches, great questions, stimulating conversation, which we will do again next month. Welcome to new members! See information at end of email for more about getting plugged into the group.
