March Notes…

At our February meeting, Richard Barrow shared two outstanding experiences he had last year:

** First, as a member of the 2017 Periscope Class sponsored by the Arts and Business Council of Nashville – see https://www.abcnashville.org/periscope/.  Deadline for this year’s class is fast approaching, and Richard can give us some insights into what he gained, and answer any questions.

** Second, Richard had a great show at the airport this fall as part of the Flying Solo series – see his images at http://www.rbarrowimages.com. He also discussed his inspirations and personal analysis of each of his photographs.

Perspectives Exhibition Change of Venue!

SNAP just got word from Provence that they are starting a major renovation the day after Thanksgiving, which means two very important things:
(1) All current artwork needs to be picked up immediately – or at the very latest, Wed November 22nd.
(2)  The cafe is going in a new direction, so SNAP won’t be able to show our work at this location.  The new Director of Operations for Provence said, “We are so grateful for the long-standing partnership we have had and all of the beautiful art and photography that has been displayed.”  We conveyed to her that we were also very appreciative of this partnership, of course.
Luckily we have an alternative venue for our Perspectives Show – the JCC will give us the long wall in the gallery where we did a push-pin show in 2016.  The show in the large gallery will compliment our show, and the space in the smaller gallery where we’ll have our photos will have TACA pieces, so should get a lot of traffic.  The show will just be up for the month of December.
Dates:
          * Pieces selected by juror to be delivered on December 1st by mid-morning
          * Artist reception:  December 6th
          * Pieces picked up:  End of the month
For 2018 we are actively searching for other venues.  Our arrangements may be different than what we enjoyed at Provence – but our goal is to still do 4 shows a year (including or in addition to the JCC annual show).  We may find multiple places that would give us a month or two, for example – We may find one great place just like Provence – who knows?  But we need your help.  Shoot any ideas you have to emily.passino@gmail.com and I’ll share with the planning committee.

October Meeting Notes…

They say it will be fall any day now … and many of us will have our hands full with autumn photography. Be sure to leave yourself enough time to attend our October 24th meeting at Dury’s. We will be hearing from Michael Ray Knott, who will review his selections for our current Provence exhibition. Just look at his experience…I’m certainly looking forward to meeting him and hearing what he has to say.

Call for SNAP Submissions – Winter 2017|Theme “Perspective”

PERSPECTIVE-iiiAs a SNAP member, you are invited and encouraged to submit photos for our next Provence SNAP Photography Show.

Theme: PERSPECTIVE. For this show, perspective means “viewpoint” – a way of looking at or thinking about something.  Strong photos will capture something a casual passerby may not see. Perhaps the vantage point is different, or the story told provokes a new way of considering something. Finding a unique way to point to a selected scene delivers a message to the viewers which the photographer directs.

Juror:  The juror for this exhibit is V e s n a  P a v l o v i ć, a Vanderbilt Associate Professor of Art who is astonishingly prolific and creative. She has exhibited widely in both solo and group exhibitions, and has work included in major private and public art collections, including the Phillips, the Hirschhorn and others around the world. Zeitgeist gallery here in Nashville represents her work. See http://vesnapavlovic.com/index.php?/photographs/

SNAP Meeting Notes for August…

IMHO our S.N.A.P. at J.C.C. 2017 exhibition is a great success. Our juror, Jerry Park made a fantastic selection of photographs (and why not, considering the truly outstanding work you submitted) and Carrie Mills curated and placed them in exactly the right place. For those who were not able to make it, our reception was the place to be (contrary to the opinion of Williamson Co. Fair, but we’ll let that go) with excellent attendance and fine food. Thanks again to Carrie and to Gerald, Wesley and all who brought wine.

SNAP Meeting Notes for July…

Summer… and lots of things going on this month. The submissions for our annual S.N.A.P. at JCC Exhibit are in; 138 photographs are vying for one of the 40 available positions in the show. The images have been sent to our juror, and participants should be getting the results soon, with enough time to print and frame their work in time to deliver them from hanging on August 1st.

Our speaker for the July S.N.A.P. meeting is our juror, Jerry Park, who will discuss his selections for the S.N.A.P. at JCC show. The meeting is as always, the 4th Tuesday of the month, 6:30 pm at Dury’s.

Jerry Parkjerrypark

I began seriously pursuing photography in 2007 after a career in corporate America.  Landscapes were my first love and continue to be a frequent subject.  In addition, I’ve enjoyed building a portfolio of the interiors of all sorts of workspaces, from a shoe shine shop to Nashville’s water filtration plant, from a car seat recoverer to a pristine Purity Dairy, from an artist’s studio to the shop of a third-generation luthier.  I’m a member of several photography organizations, including SouthLight, a 6-member salon dedicated to growing and demonstrating that art is alive and well below the Mason-Dixon line.

Theme: WORK. Again, let your imagination roll!

Juror:  The juror for this exhibit is Michael Ray Nott (http://www.michaelraynott.com/ ), noted for outstanding graphic black & white Street Photography.  Nott has studied under Gerry Winogrand, and has a design and cultural sensibility that should make this upcoming exhibit very rich.

SNAP Meeting Notes for June…

From Tom Keller, SNAP President:

What a lovely Spring…at least none of my plants have died (yet). This month we have an exciting, and, to me, different topic / speaker.

27ef868543abf9c4e16439c1aeb8f0bd

Martin O’Connor is a native Nashvillian whose photography began as a special interest then evolved into a full-time profession.  His photos have graced the pages of state and local organizations including Nashville Ballet, Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville, Franklin School of Performing Arts, University School of Nashville, Middle Tennessee State University Dance and Theatre, Vanderbilt University, Governor’s School of the Arts, and The Dancer Project.

In 2008, he received the Dance Advocate Award from the Tennessee Association of Dance.  When presenting this award they noted  “… his stunning images illustrate both his passion for the art form and the beauty of the art.  His eye for detail and compassionate spirit make him a popular photographer for dancers to work with”.

Call for SNAP Submissions – Summer 2017|Annual JCC Show

SNAP would like to invite each of you to submit entries for our annual JCC show, to be held at the Gordon Jewish Community Center (http://www.nashvillejcc.org/) on Percy Warner Blvd during the month of August. This is traditionally the major exhibition for SNAP each year, so we want to encourage everyone to participate.

Theme: There is no “theme” for this show, but the JCC can reject photos with images of full frontal nudity, violent subject matter, and religious symbolism. They are looking for “family friendly” images. Past shows have highlighted a broad variety of subjects and styles.

Juror:  The juror for this exhibit is Jerry Park (http://jerryparkphotography.com ), who many SNAP members know.  Park is a founding member of the SouthLight Salon, and featured at The Arts Company.
