S.N.A.P. Notes – November 2016

November’s Meeting:

1-jan-pic-idea

Our November meeting will welcome S.N.A.P. member Richard Barrow. His topic, “Photography Along Our Greenways” is a ‘quick start’ guide for nature photographers, encouraging them to explore other greenways beyond their local parks. Richard prepares a calendar for a non-profit branch of the Nashville Parks Dept. called “Greenways for Nashville”. In the process, he photographs year round in the greenways and his presentation covers his favorite spots (and favorite parks) as starting points for photographers.

November SNAP Notes…

What a lovely, if dry, Fall this has been! Perfect weather for photography…hope everyone has been able to take advantage and shot some more great art! Speaking of ‘Art’, Emily, Wesley and David have been busy organizing our next Provence exhibit (yes, it’s that time already). Click here for the essential information you need, but hurry, time is short.

Long Exposures:

If you missed last month’s SNAP meeting, you missed an excellent presentation about “slow shutter”, aka “long exposure” photography. Denny Adcock and and Stanton Tubb discussed techniques and showed some of their outstanding work. Thanks guys for a great discussion. For those encouraged to try (or continue) with this form of photography, I am also posting two articles and a guide as separate PDF files.

October Notes…

Next Meeting:

Due to Emily Passino’s efforts, SNAP now has a meeting place while Dury’s moves to their new home. For our upcoming October 25 meeting (and November 22, if we need it), we will meet here:
Belmont United Methodist Church
2007 Acklen Avenue / PO Box 120098
Nashville, Tennessee 37212

Emily says: They are giving us Room #25. Best entrance is across from the community center on the side. Could be parking available in the back lot next to the side entrance… look for the signage for directions to Room #25 (Thanks to Jo for the design and printing).

The Topic for the meeting will be: “Slow Shutter”

An important tool for creative photography is the use of the “slow shutter”. Extending exposure time results in a variety of visual effects and the ability to shoot in otherwise difficult situations. To help us explore this corner of our craft, we will be hearing from S.N.A.P. veterans, (and recognized Fine Art Photographers) Denny Adcock and Stanton Tubb. They will discuss technical concerns and techniques and show how they are resolved in their own work.
If you have any “slow shutter” work you would like to show / discuss, this is a good meeting to bring it along. Or, if you have any questions or ideas in this area, Denny and Stanton will be glad to respond during their presentation.

Dury’s New Location:

Dury’s will open October 24 at their new location, 1027 Murfreesboro Pike, Nashville, TN 37217.

Update from Emily about the next Provence exhibit…

Details are still being worked out to accommodate both the juror and Provence. But with time ticking by we wanted you all to know that it’s likely to be a very short time-frame mainly so we can take advantage of Christmas in the village. So! Start deciding now which 4 gorgeous shots you’d like to submit that respond to the theme, “photos inspired by art.”

Don’t over think this one! It could be a painterly shot or a shot reminiscent of a particular artistic style or period, or a shot composed in along the lines of classic principles, or…. maybe artists at work, or museum goers, or your version of abstract or geometric works. As we’ve been reminded, visual art shares so many perspectives, regardless of the medium. This exercise should make for good conversation too as we explore what each other is thinking as we make our selections and then see how a museum director views it all. Plus , during holidays, what we produce may find not just an appreciative audience but some people who might actually purchase things!
Hopefully we’ll get this all squared away soon. Look for official call by next week. But start thinking now, because we won’t have a lot of time to pull it off.

Local Exhibits:

Not much to announce by way of photography exhibits or events this month. The “Tranquility” exhibit continues at Chromatics until January 12. If you have not seen the show, check it out as it includes a number of S.N.A.P. member’s work.

The Tinney Contemporary continues it’s exhibition of David Yarrow’s Wild Encounters through October 29.

“His unusual angles are the result of hours of research and elaborate planning, as well as countless trials and errors in the field. For Yarrow, photography is about active nature rather than passive observation, often creating a feeling of being sometimes unsettlingly close to the animal. African elephants tower, lions stare into the camera, tigers look up from the water, and rhinoceroses charge straight at the camera.”

September SNAP Notes…

Next Meeting, New Location!

Due to Emily Passino’s efforts, SNAP now has a meeting place while Dury’s moves to their new home.

For September 27 and October 25 (and November 22, if we need it), we will meet here:

Room 124 Belmont United Methodist Church 2007 Acklen Avenue / PO Box 120098 Nashville, Tennessee 37212

Emily says:  Best entrance is across from the community center on the side. Could be parking available in the back lot next to the side entrance. Certainly for this first meeting we’ll need some volunteers to arrive early and post signs and/or direct people to the meeting room and get it all set up. And Jo Fields has offered to make directional signs and to contribute the voluntary fee…Thank you Jo.

Our meeting this month will again be the popular ‘group critique’ in which we each bring 3-4 prints of projects on which we are currently working. After time for general viewing, we will briefly discuss our project and open it up for Q&A (critique) from the members. Depending on how many decide to participate, each person will have 10-15 minutes (?) So gather up your prints (don’t need to be mounted) and brush up on the Artists Statement (doesn’t need to be formal) about your project.

It would be useful if you would let me, Tom Keller, know that you are planning to participate, but if you decide to at the last minute, that’s OK too.

Pinhole Photography…

First, there was the workshop / shoot at Centennial Park last Sunday; Denney under the weather, but Gerald brought a bunch of film cameras w/ pin holes and we shot for a couple of hours. (Gerald was also kind enough to do the processing and scanning for us.)

At our meeting last night they discussed some of the theory and history of pinhole photography, and Gerald discussed some of his own work as well as some that members brought in…a very enjoyable and informative event.

Exhibition Runs January 9 – January 30, 2016

Reception: Saturday, January 9, 2016, 6-9pm, in conjunction with the East Side Art Stumble

What does art about Nashville look like if it doesn’t look like the downtown skyline? We’re set to find out. Gallery Luperca invited artists who currently live in, have lived in, or have been influenced by time spent in Nashville to create work about this place that we love in celebration all the aspects of life in Nashville WITHOUT referencing the skyline.

The resulting exhibition brings together work from artists working in mediums that range from folk art to photography to digital film. Artists include Black & Jones, David Morel(SNAP member), John Warren, Paul Collins, Lisa Haddad, Donna M. Kilkelly, Randy Toy, and Gary Johnson. More artists TBA.
