March Notes…

At our February meeting, Richard Barrow shared two outstanding experiences he had last year:

** First, as a member of the 2017 Periscope Class sponsored by the Arts and Business Council of Nashville – see https://www.abcnashville.org/periscope/.  Deadline for this year’s class is fast approaching, and Richard can give us some insights into what he gained, and answer any questions.

** Second, Richard had a great show at the airport this fall as part of the Flying Solo series – see his images at http://www.rbarrowimages.com. He also discussed his inspirations and personal analysis of each of his photographs.

February Notes…

It is my deepest honor to have represented and served you as S.N.A.P. President. The time has come to pass the torch, and Emily Passino, emily.passino@gmail.com is now our new leader. Jen Vogus and Jo Fields will be assisting her, and, of course Kay and I will be back-up as well. David Morel continues as our web gee…uh, GUY and Wesley and Emily continue with our exhibits. Good luck to all of them.

SNAP Meeting Notes for August…

IMHO our S.N.A.P. at J.C.C. 2017 exhibition is a great success. Our juror, Jerry Park made a fantastic selection of photographs (and why not, considering the truly outstanding work you submitted) and Carrie Mills curated and placed them in exactly the right place. For those who were not able to make it, our reception was the place to be (contrary to the opinion of Williamson Co. Fair, but we’ll let that go) with excellent attendance and fine food. Thanks again to Carrie and to Gerald, Wesley and all who brought wine.

SNAP Meeting Notes for July…

Summer… and lots of things going on this month. The submissions for our annual S.N.A.P. at JCC Exhibit are in; 138 photographs are vying for one of the 40 available positions in the show. The images have been sent to our juror, and participants should be getting the results soon, with enough time to print and frame their work in time to deliver them from hanging on August 1st.

Our speaker for the July S.N.A.P. meeting is our juror, Jerry Park, who will discuss his selections for the S.N.A.P. at JCC show. The meeting is as always, the 4th Tuesday of the month, 6:30 pm at Dury’s.

I began seriously pursuing photography in 2007 after a career in corporate America.  Landscapes were my first love and continue to be a frequent subject.  In addition, I’ve enjoyed building a portfolio of the interiors of all sorts of workspaces, from a shoe shine shop to Nashville’s water filtration plant, from a car seat recoverer to a pristine Purity Dairy, from an artist’s studio to the shop of a third-generation luthier.  I’m a member of several photography organizations, including SouthLight, a 6-member salon dedicated to growing and demonstrating that art is alive and well below the Mason-Dixon line.

SNAP Meeting Notes for June…

From Tom Keller, SNAP President:

What a lovely Spring…at least none of my plants have died (yet). This month we have an exciting, and, to me, different topic / speaker.

27ef868543abf9c4e16439c1aeb8f0bd

Martin O’Connor is a native Nashvillian whose photography began as a special interest then evolved into a full-time profession.  His photos have graced the pages of state and local organizations including Nashville Ballet, Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville, Franklin School of Performing Arts, University School of Nashville, Middle Tennessee State University Dance and Theatre, Vanderbilt University, Governor’s School of the Arts, and The Dancer Project.

In 2008, he received the Dance Advocate Award from the Tennessee Association of Dance.  When presenting this award they noted  “… his stunning images illustrate both his passion for the art form and the beauty of the art.  His eye for detail and compassionate spirit make him a popular photographer for dancers to work with”.

May’s Meeting Speaker: Jack Spencer!

Fantastic news! Our guest for the May 23rd S.N.A.P. meeting is (drum-roll) … JACK SPENCER, well known and internationally exhibited Nashville photography artist.

This Land

Nashville Scene had this to say about him: “A prolific fine art photographer who’s had over 80 solo shows and exhibited in just about every major American city, Spencer creates images both stark and lush, though nearly all share a haunting mysticism, a sense that each moment holds secrets far beyond what our narrow minds typically perceive.”

April Meeting Notes…

S.N.A.P. at Provence Cafe

Spring is sprung, the grass is riz…and so have the photographs in our “Night” exhibition at Provence. Again, I am blown away by the quality and variety of images in the show. Be sure to be there for the Reception next Thursday, April 20 to see the show and talk with the artists.

The juror for this exhibit is Heather Lose, a creative director and fine art photographer who helped co-found the Nashville Community Darkroom and, more recently, WXNA 101.5 FM. She will be discussing the photographs she selected for the exhibit at our next meeting at Dury’s, Tuesday, April 25 beginning at 6:30. See you there!

Our March meeting was a real treat…a field trip to the Frist Center for the Visual Arts to see the Irving Penn exhibit. Those who have seen it are complimentary of the quality and content of the show. If you haven’t seen it yet, this is an exhibit you shouldn’t miss. It remains until May 29.

September SNAP Notes…

Next Meeting, New Location!

Due to Emily Passino’s efforts, SNAP now has a meeting place while Dury’s moves to their new home.

For September 27 and October 25 (and November 22, if we need it), we will meet here:

Room 124 Belmont United Methodist Church 2007 Acklen Avenue / PO Box 120098 Nashville, Tennessee 37212

Emily says:  Best entrance is across from the community center on the side. Could be parking available in the back lot next to the side entrance. Certainly for this first meeting we’ll need some volunteers to arrive early and post signs and/or direct people to the meeting room and get it all set up. And Jo Fields has offered to make directional signs and to contribute the voluntary fee…Thank you Jo.

Our meeting this month will again be the popular ‘group critique’ in which we each bring 3-4 prints of projects on which we are currently working. After time for general viewing, we will briefly discuss our project and open it up for Q&A (critique) from the members. Depending on how many decide to participate, each person will have 10-15 minutes (?) So gather up your prints (don’t need to be mounted) and brush up on the Artists Statement (doesn’t need to be formal) about your project.

It would be useful if you would let me, Tom Keller, know that you are planning to participate, but if you decide to at the last minute, that’s OK too.

Chromatics 2nd Floor Gallery – Tranquility Show…

At least a dozen S.N.A.P. members are in this exhibit. Please show your support.

Meeting Notes…

Pinhole Photography…

First, there was the workshop / shoot at Centennial Park last Sunday; Denney under the weather, but Gerald brought a bunch of film cameras w/ pin holes and we shot for a couple of hours. (Gerald was also kind enough to do the processing and scanning for us.)

At our meeting last night they discussed some of the theory and history of pinhole photography, and Gerald discussed some of his own work as well as some that members brought in…a very enjoyable and informative event.
